Pop Will Eat Itself

1989-05-09

Kilburn National

You may laugh at this now, but there was a time when PWEI were considered to be very uncool. My, how times have changed.

I remember when I went to be buy the tickets from the Kilburn National in an attempt to save money. They were available from the estate agents downstairs. This might not seem like a big deal now, but try being a shy 15 year old lad asking a pretty blond estate agent for 'tickets to Pop Will Eat Itself please' and you have all the elements for a three part drama on ITV. Very traumatic.

Anyway, my mum insisted on coming along as well. She was begining to find the people who went to these gigs intensly interesting to watch and I think she saw it as some kind of sociological experiment observing these weird kids. Her findings are yet to be published.

The support was Yeah God who were incredibly loud in that nasty 'let's turn everything up to eleven even if it does sound crap' sort of way. John Moore and The Expressway were second support and vaguely entertaining considering he was an ex member of Jesus & Mary Chain goneall commercial.

PWEI were fantastic and this was my first of many PWEI gigs. In retrospect I'm quite fond of this one because it was the tour debuting their best album called This is This. If you're really lucky you might find a copy in your local second hand record shop (if you're unlucky you might find two. Boom-boom!).
